Border clashes erupted in Assam and Mizoram, killing six policemen and injuring 50 others

Guwahati: The border dispute between Assam and Mizoram has escalated into a violent feud. Clashes between civilians and security guards resulted in a shootout in which six police personnel were killed and 50 others were injured. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has now spoken to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Mizoram Chief Minister Joramthanga over phone over the ongoing dispute between the two states and called on both the states to work for peace on the border.

 
The three districts of Kachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi in the Barak Valley of Assam and the districts of Aizawl, Kolsib and Mamit in Mizoram are bounded by 164 km. The two states had a border dispute last year, in August 2020.
Assam and Mizoram are both mountainous states and the citizens of these states are always in dispute over small pieces of land. Assam police had recently banned Mizoram citizens from farming on the border and expelled them from there. As a result, a new border dispute has arisen between the two states.
Mizoram police have alleged that Assam police set fire to eight huts along the Atlang River. As a result, dissatisfaction is said to have spread among the citizens of Mizoram. Police have alleged that Mizoram citizens opened fire on Assam police.
Meanwhile, the Assam Chief Minister has expressed grief over the deaths of six policemen and said in his message that the six personnel had sacrificed their lives while guarding the state border. While the border dispute between the two states is raging, the Union Home Minister has held discussions with the Chief Ministers of these two states. He also called for peace on the disputed border and for the issue to be resolved by consensus.
