Constitution or Manusmriti...? Rahul Gandhi asked questions to BJP by quoting Savarkar in Lok Sabha
New Delhi:- Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Saturday targeted the BJP-led NDA government during a debate in the Lok Sabha on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of the country. Rahul Gandhi cited the writings of Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar while explaining the difference between the Constitution and the religious book Manusmriti.
Rahul Gandhi, holding a copy of the Constitution in his right hand and a copy of the Manusmriti in his left hand, said, "Savarkar's words are that the worst thing about the Constitution of India is that there is nothing Indian in it. Manusmriti is the scripture that is most revered for our Hindu nation after the Vedas and from which our ancient times have become the basis of our culture, customs, thoughts and behavior. This book has codified the spiritual and divine journey of our nation for centuries. Today Manusmriti is the law." He said, "Savarkar has clearly said in his writings that there is nothing Indian in our Constitution. He has clearly said that this book should be replaced by the book by which India runs. This is what the fight is about."
"BJP leaders are insulting the memory of Savarkar"
The Congress leader claimed that BJP leaders are insulting the memory of Savarkar by praising the Constitution. He said, "I want to ask you (ruling party) do you stand by the words of your leader? Do you support the words of your leader? Because when you speak about protecting the Constitution in Parliament, you are ridiculing Savarkar, you are abusing Savarkar, you are defaming Savarkar."
From Rajnath, Priyanka to Akhilesh... who said what during the special discussion on the Constitution in the Lok Sabha?
Earlier, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju accused the Congress of selectively taking over constitutional values, ignoring its historical contradictions. Rijiju started today's session by criticizing the way the Congress treated Dr BR Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Constitution.
''Nehru's focus was on the politics of appeasement''
Kiren Rijiju alleged that the party marginalized Dr Ambedkar and recognized his contribution very late. Citing a document, the Union minister talked about former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's criticism of Dr Ambedkar and alleged that Nehru's focus was mainly on the politics of appeasement rather than addressing the concerns of the Scheduled Castes.
Rajnath's scathing attack on Rahul in the debate on Constitution - 'He roams around with the Constitution in his pocket'
While Rahul Gandhi attacked Savarkar today, his sister and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi targeted the RSS while giving her first speech in the Lok Sabha yesterday. She accused the BJP of confusing between 'Constitution of India' and 'Sangh Ka Vidhan'.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver the concluding speech in the two-day debate on the Constitution.
