Corporation announces sports policy, focuses on developing wrestlers

Nagpur, Dec 24: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is formulating a sports policy with a view to boosting the sports environment and making more and more players in the city famous nationally and internationally. The sports policy has reached its final stage and was passed unanimously by the Sports Special Committee.
A meeting of the Sports Special Committee was held on Monday in the hall of Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh Smriti Standing Committee on various issues. Committee Chairman Pramod Tabhane, Deputy Chairman Lakhan Yerwar, Member Sheshrao Gotmare, Harish Gwalbanshi, Member Jishan Mumtaz Mohd. Irfan Ansari, Deputy Commissioner Vijay Deshmukh, Control Officer Nitin Bhole, Sports Officer Piyush Ambulkar were present.
Discussions were held on the implementation of the sports policy set by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. At the end of the discussion, Speaker Pramod Tabhane unanimously announced that the sports policy has been passed. Although the resolution on sports policy has been passed, the mayor and the municipal commissioner will have all the power to make necessary changes in it in time, he said, directing the department to take action in this regard. Harish Gwalbanshi, a member of the committee, suggested that the sports policy should include provisions regarding facilities related to the sport of wrestling. He suggested to pay special attention to this as no wrestler has come forward from Nagpur city for many years. Sports officials said that all sports in the Olympics were included in the sports policy.
A ground is being developed in each of the six assembly constituencies in Nagpur city and its implementation was reviewed by the Sports Committee Chairpersons. The grounds transferred to NCP have been selected and so far the committee has inspected 5 out of 6 grounds namely Maratoli, Premnagar, Juni Basti, Bapu Nagar and Mahavir Nagar. Funds have been provided for the development of these grounds and the tender process will be implemented as soon as possible, said Sports Committee Chairman Pramod Tabhane. The committee also reviewed the status of the skating ring at Daga Layout in Gandhinagar under Dharampeth zone. Efforts are being made by the Municipal Corporation to produce good skaters from this ring and a training institute will be selected for this. However, when selecting an organization, it is essential to include the condition that the player in the organization must be a national and international medalist. The sports committee chairpersons directed to include this condition so that the children can get better training and perform better in competitions.
Yashwant Stadium is not cleaned regularly and there are many complaints that grass has grown there at present. Committee Chairman Pramod Tabhane also instructed the department to take immediate action to clean the place and cut the grass.
Short film on 50 years of sports work
So far many important decisions have been taken by the Sports Committee of Nagpur Municipal Corporation. That decision brought many benefits to the city's sports sector. In order to make the public aware of this work and future plans, a short film will be made on the work done by the sports department in the last 50 years. The sports committee chairpersons directed the administration to take action in this regard. Besides, August 29 is the birthday of hockey wizard Major Dhyanchand. The Speaker also directed that all the members of the Sports Committee and all the officials of the Sports Department should be present in the Corporation to pay their respects on the occasion of Major Dhyanchand's birthday.
Committee member Harish Gwalbanshi suggested that Nagpur Municipal Corporation schools should have sports facilities like private schools. This decision will be important so that the students of the corporation do not lag behind in the competition, they get all the facilities related to the sports environment in the school itself.
