Environment or religious convenience in Nashik? Thackeray group opposes tree felling plan

Nashik, November 28: As soon as news emerged that thousands of trees will be felled in the Tapovan area of ??Nashik in preparation for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) party chief Uddhav Thackeray has strongly criticized the state government.
Speaking to the media today, Uddhav Thackeray said, “Kumbh Mela is an integral part of our culture, we are not against setting up a Sadhugram. But Tapovan must have experienced many more Kumbh Melas than us. Should that ancient forest be destroyed for the Kumbh Mela? Our opposition is only to the felling of trees.”
Tapovan is a scenic and historically important place on the banks of the Godavari river. A large amount of space is required for the residence of sadhus and saints during the Kumbh Mela, for which the government is understood to have proposed to fell trees. However, environmentalists and opposition parties have started strong opposition to this.
Local leaders of Shiv Sena have also taken an aggressive stand on this. “A balance should be struck between environment and tradition. Instead of cutting down trees and holding Kumbh Mela, an alternative place should be found,” they are demanding.
Meanwhile, the state government has not yet issued an official statement on this. This new storm between preparations for Kumbh Mela and environmental conservation is likely to intensify in the next few days.
