West Bengal; Mamata Banerjee to contest by-election

Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Party has won the prestigious assembly elections in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee came to power for the third time in the May 2, 2021 elections, defeating the BJP. Despite winning in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had to be elected to the Assembly in six months as she was facing defeat from Nandigram. He was said to have chosen Bhawanipur assembly constituency for this.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress MLA from Bhawanipur Shobhandev Chattopadhyay has resigned and by-polls will be held in Bhawanipur on September 30, the Election Commission said this afternoon.
The commission said in a statement that the by-elections would be held on October 3. By-elections will also be held on September 30 in Samserganj, Jangipur and Pipli in West Bengal. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee may contest from Bhawanipur. Also, the Election Commission has postponed the polls for 31 other seats in view of the Corona situation.
Considering the constitutional requirements and the special request of West Bengal, it has been decided to hold by-elections for Assembly constituency 159-Bhawanipur. The Election Commission has said that strict criteria have been imposed as a precautionary measure.
At the same time, the Election Commission clarified that considering the views and inputs of the Chief Secretaries and Chief Electoral Officers of the concerned states, it has been decided not to hold by-elections in 31 other Assembly constituencies and 3 Parliamentary constituencies.
