Case Registered Against Meta India Head Arun Srinivas Over PM Modi Deepfake Videos
Major Action by Hyderabad Cyber ??Police:
Hyderabad: The Cyber ??Crime Police have registered a serious case against Meta India head Arun Srinivas and certain social media users. This case concerns AI-generated 'deepfake' videos featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to the police, individuals used AI technology to edit an original video—which Prime Minister Modi had shared during a campaign event—and circulated the altered version on social media. It is alleged that this misleading video was disseminated across Facebook and Instagram (Meta's platforms).
The police state that the video violates provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act. Cyber ??crime investigators are currently probing who created the deepfake video, how it spread so widely, and whether the safety measures on Meta's platforms were adequate.
Prior to this, the Hyderabad Cyber ??Police had summoned Meta representatives to seek clarifications regarding the processes for identifying and removing AI-related scams, fake advertisements, and morphed content. This case was registered following those interactions. This action comes amidst an ongoing dispute between the Government of India and Meta.
