Digital identity card for stray dogs! Innovative decision of Pune Municipal Corporation
Microchips for stray dogs in Pune! A big step towards ‘Rabies-free Pune’
Pune, November 9: The Pune Municipal Corporation has taken a revolutionary decision in the management of stray dogs in Pune city. In a recent important meeting chaired by the Additional Municipal Commissioner, it was unanimously decided to implant microchips in the skin of stray dogs during their sterilization surgery. This decision is believed to make the management of stray dogs more scientific, transparent and effective.
Through this microchip technology, complete information about each stray dog ??will be available in digital form. This will include the dog’s identity, color, current location, date of sterilization surgery, date of vaccination, as well as the names of the relevant institutions and medical officers. This digital record will bring great accuracy in the work of rearing, revaccination and rabies control of stray dogs. The Pune Municipal Corporation's health department has approved this decision in principle and has made it mandatory for all animal welfare organizations working with the municipal corporation to implant microchips during sterilization surgeries.
This initiative has started very successfully. For the first time, microchips were successfully implanted in the skin of three stray dogs with the initiative and cooperation of an animal-loving woman from Mohammadwadi and Hadapsar areas. With these chips, a complete digital record of these dogs has now been created. This will help in identifying them in the future, tracking vaccinations and completely avoiding the risk of repeated sterilization surgeries on the same dog.
Pune Municipal Corporation officials are very enthusiastic about this initiative. “Microchips will bring transparency in the management of stray dogs and will stop wrong data or double sterilization. Apart from this, it will be of great help in controlling life-threatening diseases like rabies,” said a senior official.
This decision is also being welcomed by animal lovers and citizens. “Till now, when stray dogs were caught, their information would be kept only on paper. Now, with digital records, the history of each dog can be found with a click. This is real progress,” said a volunteer from an animal welfare organization.
The ambitious campaign of the Pune Municipal Corporation, ‘Rabies-Free Pune’, is now set to gain momentum. The municipal administration has expressed its belief that microchip technology will enable the vaccination campaign to be implemented effectively and the rate of rabies in the city can be brought to zero as soon as possible.
This decision will be of utmost importance considering the number of stray dogs in Pune city. Thousands of stray dogs in the city will be microchipped in the coming months, for which the municipal corporation will provide special funds and manpower.
Pune will be the first metropolis in the state to use technology to address the issue of stray dogs. It is hoped that if this initiative is successful, other cities will also get inspired by it.
