'Point' system for drivers: License will be cancelled if rules are violated, Gadkari's important announcement
New Delhi: To curb the increasing road accidents in the country and to discipline drivers, the central government is introducing a new driving license system. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced this system. In this new scheme, specific 'points' will be given to each driver's license. These points will be deducted if traffic rules are violated and if all the points are exhausted, the license will be directly cancelled.
Gadkari said, "Each driver's license will have certain points. Points will be deducted for mistakes like breaking the signal, exceeding the speed limit or using a mobile phone while driving. If all the points are exhausted, the driver's license will be suspended for six months. In case of serious offenses, it will be cancelled permanently." He expressed confidence that this system will be effective in curbing unruly drivers.
Apart from this, the government has also made special provisions for accident victims. Gadkari said that under the 'PM Rahat Yojana', accident victims will get free cashless treatment of up to Rs 1.5 lakh. The government will bear the entire cost of the first seven days after the accident. This will encourage people to help accident victims and there will be no fear of the cost of treatment.
Presenting the shocking statistics of accidents in the country, Gadkari said, "Every year, 5 lakh accidents occur in the country, in which 1.8 lakh people die. 72 percent of these deaths are youth between the ages of 18 and 45. 10,119 children under the age of 18 have also died in accidents. 54 thousand people have lost their lives without wearing helmets and 14 thousand people without using seat belts." These statistics highlight the need for strict measures to prevent accidents.
A clear date has not been announced yet as to when this new system will be implemented, but its implementation is likely to start soon. The government has claimed that this will increase road safety and reduce accidents.
