'Women's Rule' at the Mumbai Municipal Corporation! 'Metro Woman' Ashwini Bhide Set to Become the First Female Commissioner in BMC History
Mumbai, March 31, 2026: For the first time in the history of the country's wealthiest and largest municipal corporation, the administration of Mumbai is set to be entrusted to a woman. The appointment of Ashwini Bhide—an experienced IAS officer from the 1995 batch—as the Commissioner of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been confirmed.
The tenure of the incumbent Commissioner, Bhushan Gagrani, concludes today, March 31, 2026. Sources indicate that following this, the crucial responsibility of the office will be handed over to Ashwini Bhide. Bhide currently serves as the Additional Chief Secretary in the Chief Minister's Office. Prior to this, she served as the Managing Director of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, where she successfully executed challenging infrastructure projects, such as the Metro network. Her reputation for strict discipline, technical expertise, and proven performance placed her at the forefront of the contenders for this position.
The names of Sanjay Mukherjee and Aseem Gupta were also being considered for the post of Mumbai Municipal Commissioner. However, given the context of ongoing projects—including Mumbai's road network, the Coastal Road, sewage management, and other critical initiatives—it is understood that the government ultimately gave its seal of approval to Ashwini Bhide, recognizing the value of her extensive experience. If her appointment is finalized, she is expected to serve a full tenure extending until 2030.
This appointment of Ashwini Bhide—widely known as the 'Metro Woman'—is regarded as a pivotal moment for Mumbai's infrastructure development. The historic event of a woman becoming the BMC Commissioner for the very first time is set to mark the beginning of a new chapter in the development trajectory of Mumbai.
