“Congress Leaders Themselves Distributed Money to the BJP”; Shailesh Agarwal Withdraws Candidacy; Arun Lakhani Elected Unopposed
Chandrapur: BJP candidate Arun Lakhani has been elected unopposed to the Maharashtra Legislative Council seat representing the Chandrapur-Gadchiroli-Wardha constituency. This outcome followed the withdrawal of nomination papers by Shailesh Agarwal, the official candidate of the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance.
While withdrawing his candidacy, Shailesh Agarwal leveled serious allegations against local leaders within the Congress party. He stated, “It was certain leaders within the Congress party themselves who distributed money on behalf of the BJP candidate. Consequently, Congress corporators and party workers departed on a ‘tour’ (excursion).”
Speaking to the media in Wardha, Agarwal remarked that he did not receive the expected support from Congress leaders across all three districts—Chandrapur, Wardha, and Gadchiroli. Criticizing the electoral process, he asserted, “Elections have now turned into a marketplace for money. The candidate who offers money is the one who gets chosen.”
Sudhir Kothari, the candidate from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP—Ajit Pawar faction), also withdrew his candidacy. As a result, with no remaining opponents, Arun Lakhani was declared victorious unopposed.
Agarwal’s Primary Allegation:
Congress leaders themselves distributed money to aid the BJP candidate and sent their own party corporators away on an excursion, thereby preventing him from being able to mobilize the necessary votes.
This incident has caused a major stir within the Congress party and has raised serious questions regarding the conduct and role of the local leadership.
