"He will call off the fast tomorrow, but..."; Gitanjali Angmo reads out Sonam Wangchuk's message; one condition set
New Delhi: Education activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike for 20 days, is ready to call off his fast tomorrow (July 20). However, there is one crucial condition. His wife, Dr. Gitanjali Angmo, read out Sonam Wangchuk's message to the protesters at Jantar Mantar.
Gitanjali Angmo stated that if political leaders visit Sonam Wangchuk at Safdarjung Hospital and promise to raise the issue of accountability and reforms in the education sector during the Parliament's Monsoon Session, he will end his fast tomorrow.
On Sunday morning, the police admitted Sonam Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital following a Delhi High Court order. Gitanjali had requested that he be shifted to a private hospital, but the High Court rejected the plea. She has now filed a petition in the Supreme Court.
Gitanjali further said, "The 'Chalo Sansad' (March to Parliament) rally on July 20 belongs to every student and every Indian. More than Sonam's physical presence here, his hunger strike has created significant awareness regarding the issue of education. Just as the hunger strike was conducted peacefully, the march too should be peaceful. Only if this march succeeds will it be a true tribute to Sonam Wangchuk's work."
