1.7 Million Government Employees in Maharashtra Begin Indefinite Strike Today; State Services Likely to be Disrupted
Mumbai | Correspondent:
Approximately 1.7 million employees across the state—comprising government and semi-government staff, as well as teaching and non-teaching personnel—have gone on an indefinite strike starting today (April 21, 2026). This strike has been called amidst allegations that the government has neglected their long-pending demands.
According to employee unions, the path of a strike was ultimately chosen after months of dialogue with the government failed to yield any concrete decisions. This strike is expected to have a significant impact on government operations, ranging from the State Secretariat down to the Taluka level. Furthermore, hospitals, schools, and other public services could also be affected.
???? Key Demands:
Reinstate the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
Issue a clear notification regarding the Revised Pension Scheme.
Increase the retirement age from 58 to 60 years.
Immediately fill all vacant posts.
Implement a comprehensive health insurance scheme.
The employee unions stated that despite staging various protests multiple times over the past year, the government failed to take any decisive action. Consequently, this indefinite strike has been declared.
Meanwhile, the State Government has declared the strike illegal and has warned that disciplinary action will be taken against any employees participating in it. It has also been clarified that the 'No Work, No Pay' policy will be strictly enforced.
