100 BJP members elected unopposed in Maharashtra; Opposition alleges misuse of power

Mumbai, November 24, 2025: Unopposed elections are underway in the local body elections in Maharashtra. As many candidates withdrew their applications on the last day of withdrawal of applications, 100 BJP municipal council members have been elected unopposed. This has become the focus of criticism from the opposition on the ruling grand alliance, who are accusing it of misuse of power and intimidation of candidates. BJP state president Ravindra Chavan gave this information, saying that this shows the people's faith in the party's development works.
According to the information, the division-wise distribution of the members elected unopposed is as follows: 4 from Konkan region, 49 from North Maharashtra, 41 from West Maharashtra, and 3 members each from Marathwada and Vidarbha regions. This election was held for 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats in the first phase, where voting will be held on December 2 and the results will be announced the next day. Chavan said, "On the last day of withdrawal of applications, many candidates withdrew their applications on their own, which made this unopposed election possible. This is a sign of the party's popularity."
However, the opposition is furious over the unopposed election. The Maha Vikas Aghadi has accused the ruling grand alliance of misusing power. Congress state president Harshvardhan Sapkal said, "The BJP has openly used its power to threaten opposition candidates. In Bihar, they call it 'jungle raj', but here it is really jungle raj. All limits have been crossed." Thackeray group leader Ambadas Danve criticized Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's public speech and said, "Pawar says, 'Help, we will give development funds.' Isn't this a bargain? The funds do not belong to his family, they belong to the taxpayers. This is a threat."
However, BJP leader and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that these allegations are baseless. He said, "BJP believes in democracy and the electoral system. Uncontested elections show people's faith in the party leadership and development work. The opposition alleges nepotism, but we will develop the entire Maharashtra. All cities will develop equally after the elections." Fadnavis, speaking on Ajit Pawar's statement, clarified that some words in the speech do not mean the same and made a statement that assured that the people will give a complete majority to the Mahayuti.
In this election in Maharashtra, a total of 288 municipal councils will be contested for a total of more than 2,800 seats. These uncontested results of the first phase are increasing political tension between the ruling party and the opposition. The Election Commission has said that the entire process is transparent and has also clarified that strict action will be taken on complaints of intimidation of candidates. The attention of political leaders across the state is on this election, in which the fight between the Mahayuti and the Mahavikas Aghadi will also be seen in the actual voting.2.4sFast
