20% Ethanol Blended Petrol Mandatory in India: Environmental Protection and Fuel Saving

New Delhi, February 26, 2026: The central government has taken an important decision. From April 1, 2026, the sale of 20% ethanol blended petrol (E-20) has been made mandatory in all states and union territories of the country. The Research Octane Number (RON) of this petrol must be at least 95, which will protect the engine of vehicles and make them run smoothly.
Ethanol is made from sugarcane, maize and other grains. Blending ethanol in petrol will reduce dependence on crude oil imports, save foreign exchange and control rising pollution. This decision is important from the point of view of environmental protection, sources said.
Most vehicles manufactured after 2023 are compatible with E-20 fuel. However, some problems may arise for older vehicles. This fuel can reduce mileage by 3-7% and can damage rubber or plastic parts. However, due to the high octane number, there will be no knocking (noise) in the engine and the fuel will burn evenly, which will increase the efficiency of the vehicles.
The central government has issued a notification in this regard. This decision will strengthen the country's economy and help reduce pollution.
