350-Year-Old Sacred Tradition at Risk? Controversy Over Relocating the Palkhi Halt at Bhawani Peth's Vitoba Temple

Pune – Deep resentment is brewing among local citizens, Warkaris, and devotees as attempts are reportedly being made to relocate the traditional halt of Saint Dnyaneshwar Maharaj's Palkhi procession—a practice that has continued uninterrupted for approximately 350 years at the Palkhi Vitoba Temple in Bhawani Peth. There is a firm and unequivocal demand that this ancient tradition must not be disrupted.
It is reported that the administration is currently discussing a change in the Palkhi's halting site, citing the inconveniences experienced during the procession period as the primary reason. However, in opposition to this proposed decision, a delegation comprising trustees of the Vitthal Devasthan Sansthan and local citizens—led by BJP Corporator Vishal Dhanwade—met with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The delegation requested Chief Minister Fadnavis to instruct the administration to implement appropriate facilities and measures to ensure that the Palkhi procession proceeds without any hindrances. Furthermore, they strongly urged that the 350-year-old historical tradition associated with Bhawani Peth be preserved intact.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has adopted a positive stance on this issue and has assured the delegation that he will issue appropriate directives to the administration to extend the necessary cooperation.
Within the Warkari sect, the Palkhi procession is not merely a religious event; it constitutes an integral part of the saintly tradition and the deep-seated faith of the devotees. For generations, this specific halt in Bhawani Peth has served to unite devotees in their devotion to Lord Vitoba. Citizens argue that disrupting this tradition would amount to a direct affront to the very legacy of Saint Dnyaneshwar Maharaj.
Local merchants and residents are also voicing their opposition to this proposed change. "Do not allow this 350-year-old tradition to be broken. The Palkhi's halt at the Bhawani Peth Vitthal Temple must be maintained," they are demanding.
Currently, this issue remains a subject of intense discussion within Pune, and it is anticipated that Warkari organizations and local citizens will undertake further initiatives to safeguard and preserve this cherished tradition. Against the backdrop of the Ashadhi Wari, signs indicate that this dispute is likely to intensify further.
