660 MW Plant Down for 15 Days; Major Blow to UP Power Corp. Amidst Record Electricity Demand

Severe Heat and Power Cuts in Uttar Pradesh: The Primary Cause—A Dozen Power Plants Shut Down!
Varanasi/Lucknow, May 25, 2026: Against the backdrop of scorching heat, the persistent power cuts plaguing Uttar Pradesh are not solely due to rising demand; a major contributing factor is the shutdown of several power plants.
The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation (UP Power Corporation) has entered into power purchase agreements with plants located both within UP and in various other states. However, during the month of May, approximately a dozen power plants remained completely shut down for several days. Consequently, the Power Corporation failed to receive its anticipated electricity supply.
Most critically, a major plant with a capacity of 660 MW remained non-operational for 15 consecutive days, while another plant was down for 11 days. These shutdowns have led to an increase in unannounced load shedding across the state.
On May 22, a record-breaking 669 million units of electricity—the highest in the state's history for a single day—were supplied. However, the fact that key power plants went offline precisely when demand was at such a colossal level raises serious questions.
According to experts, these plants likely shut down due to maintenance issues, technical glitches, or fuel availability constraints. As a result, the public—already distressed by the intense heat—is being forced to endure even greater hardship.
Citizens are increasingly demanding that the state government and the Power Corporation take immediate remedial measures to address this situation.
