A Historic Peace Initiative! Israel and Lebanon Agree to Ceasefire Through Trump's Mediation; 34-Year Conflict Comes to a Halt

Washington/Beirut: Thanks to the successful mediation of U.S. President Donald Trump, the path has been cleared for direct talks between Israel and Lebanon for the first time in 34 years. Both nations have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire, which went into effect on Thursday (April 16, 2026) at 5:00 PM (EST).
Announcing the development on social media (Truth Social), Trump stated that this decision was reached following "excellent" discussions held with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "Both leaders have agreed to initiate a 10-day ceasefire for the sake of peace between their nations," Trump said.
The primary objective of this temporary ceasefire is to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, evacuate civilians from war-torn regions to safe havens, and provide essential assistance. During this period, both sides have been instructed to limit airstrikes and military operations. Discussions aimed at resolving the fundamental disputes between the two nations are set to commence during the ceasefire period.
The Trump administration clarified that the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon—along with the demilitarization of Hezbollah forces north of the Litani River—constitute key pillars of the proposed peace agreement. The deployment of international observers along the border is also being considered.
Trump remarked, "The time has come to put an end to the bloodshed in the Middle East. This is not merely a temporary measure, but a pathway leading toward a permanent peace agreement." He has extended an invitation to both leaders to attend peace talks at the White House and has directed Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to work toward establishing lasting peace. This event is being accorded historical significance, as it marks the first time in 34 years (since 1983) that direct talks are taking place between Israel and Lebanon. If this ceasefire proves successful, global oil prices are likely to decline, and it could constitute a significant step toward peace in the Middle East.
Both sides have welcomed this ceasefire, and hopes are being expressed that it will be successfully observed. This development has brought a sense of relief amidst the long-standing tensions in the Middle East.
