A quiet pillar in Latur politics has passed away: Shivraj Patil Chakurkar passes away at the age of 90

Latur, December 12, 2025 (Special Correspondent): A quiet and loyal leader in Maharashtra politics passed away today at the age of 90. Former Union Home Minister, former Lok Sabha Speaker and former Governor of Punjab Shivraj Patil Chakurkar passed away due to old age. His death has spread grief in the political circles of Maharashtra including the Congress party, and tributes were paid to this leader who inspired millions of people with his journey from Latur city to Delhi.
Shivraj Patil Chakurkar was born on October 12, 1935 in Chakur village in Latur district. After studying law, he made his debut in politics with a calm nature and hard work. His political journey started from the local level and reached the national and state levels. He has made a great contribution to the development of Latur city. He served as the Mayor of Latur for three years. During this time, he established a library in the Town Hall and took the initiative to hold an All India Marathi Literature Conference in Latur. His contribution to the cultural and literary development of the city will always be remembered.
His contribution at the state level was also remarkable. He was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly twice and also served as a Minister of State in the state government. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was a member of the Joint Committee on Parliamentary Salaries and Allowances. He served as the Minister of State for Defence during the reign of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
His entry into national politics was in 1980 when he was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Latur. After that, he won seven consecutive Lok Sabha elections, until 2004. As the Speaker of the 10th Lok Sabha, he played an important role in the order of Parliament. He was the Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008. However, after the Mumbai terrorist attacks of 26 November 2008, he resigned on 30 November 2008, taking moral responsibility. This incident created a stir across the country.
Later, he also served as the Governor of Punjab. In his nearly four-decade political career, he successfully held various positions from the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly to the Lok Sabha, from the Ministry of Defense to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Governorship. Due to his calm nature and loyalty, he was known as the 'Quiet Pillar of Latur'.
Upon learning of his death, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed their condolences. Manmohan Singh said, "Shivraj Patil was a role model in politics. His contribution will be remembered forever." The funeral will be held in Latur tomorrow, and a large number of political leaders and citizens will attend.
Shivraj Patil Chakurkar's family and the Congress party will not share this grief. Salute to his memory!
