AK-47 found in doctor's locker in Anantnag Medical College; Police on the lookout for terrorist connections

A rifle carrying 'death' in the room of a 'life-saving' doctor; Kashmir in a state of uproar
GMC Anantnag:-A shocking incident shook the entire state on Friday morning at the Government Medical College (GMC Anantnag) in Anantnag district of South Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir. While searching a personal locker in the hostel premises of the college, the police found an AK-47 assault rifle. This locker belonged to former Senior Resident Doctor Dr. Adil Ahmed Rather (age 32, resident of Qazigund, Anantnag).
Dr. Rather had worked as a Senior Resident in GMC Anantnag till October 24, 2024. Even after leaving the job, his locker was in the college. Based on confidential information, a special team of Srinagar Police carried out this operation with the help of Joint Interrogation Center (JIC) Anantnag. After confiscating the rifle, Dr. Rather has been detained and is being thoroughly interrogated.
Crimes registered by the police
Arms Act Section 7/25
UAPA Sections 13, 28, 38, 39
FIR lodged at Nowgam police station. The rifle is in the custody of Srinagar police and will be sent for forensic examination.
Four angles of investigation
1. Supplier of the rifle – serial number, ballistics test
2. Doctor’s contacts – call records, WhatsApp chats, bank transactions
3. Digital footprint – social media, e-mails
4. Terrorist network – links to Hizbul, Lashkar or new module?
A police spokesperson said, “The finding of a banned weapon with a medical professional is a very serious matter. We are investigating from all angles. Doctors have maintained silence so far.”
Reaction from the college
GMC Principal Dr. Tariq Ahmed told reporters, “We are fully cooperating with the police. All the lockers of the hostel have now been sealed. There is an atmosphere of fear among the students; counselling has been started.”
New challenge in Kashmir
Last year, there has been an increase in terror attacks in Anantnag. This is the first time such an infiltration has come to light in the medical sector. Security experts say, “Terrorists are now hiding in ‘soft targets’ like teachers, doctors, engineers. This case is the beginning of a new threat.”
