BJP defeated in Nagpur Graduates' constituency after 9,000 votes are declared invalid; Sudhakar Kohale reveals the exact reason

Nagpur: The results for the Nagpur Graduates' constituency of the Legislative Council have come as a shock to everyone. The outcome shifted at the last moment, with Congress candidate Abhijit Wanjari defeating BJP’s Sudhakar Kohale by 3,271 votes. Abhijit Wanjari (Congress) secured a total of 67,231 votes (combining first and second preferences), while Sudhakar Kohale (BJP) received 63,960 votes. Independent candidate Nitesh Karale garnered 25,909 votes. The primary reason for the defeat: 9,000 votes declared invalid. Following the loss, Sudhakar Kohale explicitly stated that approximately 9,000 votes cast for the BJP were declared invalid, which led to his defeat. Many voters had intended to vote for Kohale but marked the number '2' instead of '1' next to his name on the ballot paper, rendering those votes invalid. Kohale remarked, "Had these 9,000 votes not been declared invalid, the result could have been different. Our senior leaders will analyze this outcome. I would like to urge those BJP voters who marked '2' instead of '1' next to my name—such a way of voting is not appropriate for a democracy." The significant turnaround in the final hours has dealt a major blow to the BJP. The Congress party has successfully retained the Nagpur Graduates' constituency.
