Bangladesh PM Absent from BRICS Summit; India Makes Strategic Move by Inviting BIMSTEC Chair
New Delhi, September 10, 2026: Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will not attend the 18th BRICS Summit, hosted by India at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Humayun Kabir, clarified at a press conference that the Bangladeshi Prime Minister had not received a direct or personal invitation to the summit. Consequently, he will not attend the meeting; instead, only a delegation from Bangladesh will be sent.
Speaking to reporters—as reported by *The Daily Star*—Humayun Kabir asked, "How could we attend? Has anyone from the Bangladesh government been invited? Our Prime Minister has not been invited. The invitation from India was not addressed to the Bangladeshi Prime Minister personally but to the Chair of BIMSTEC. Therefore, the question of the Prime Minister's participation does not arise."
Against this backdrop, Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to arrive in India on Saturday for the BRICS Summit. This will be his first visit to India in seven years.
