CJP activist's home attacked after highlighting school's dilapidated state; father dies after assault; organization demands immediate arrests
Father of CJP volunteer dies following incident related to school inspection in West Bengal
An alleged attack took place at the home of Shaikh Abdul Hafiz, a volunteer with the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), in Karisunda, Bankura district, West Bengal. His father, Janab Mafik, died as a result of the assault. The CJP has demanded immediate arrests in the case.
What exactly happened?
As part of CJP’s ‘School Theek Karo’ (Fix the Schools) campaign, Abdul Hafiz inspected the local government primary school on August 13, 2026. He recorded videos documenting the school's infrastructure, sanitation facilities, and drinking water arrangements. It is alleged that armed individuals barged into his home around 8:30 PM that same evening.
According to the CJP, these individuals were identified as local BJP workers. They demanded that Hafiz delete the videos. When he refused, both Hafiz and his father were attacked. Hafiz sustained severe injuries to his neck, while his father, Janab Mafik, suffered a severe blow to the head.
Janab Mafik was hospitalized but succumbed to his injuries on August 15 (Saturday).
CJP’s Demand
Abhijit Dipke, founder and national convener of the CJP, expressed strong condemnation regarding the incident. He stated, "Abdul was attacked—and lost his father—simply for highlighting the condition of the government school where he himself had studied. It is unacceptable for people to be killed for demanding better schools. We will not remain silent. The guilty must be arrested immediately."
The CJP has demanded an impartial inquiry into the matter and protection for the family. It was also announced that a team from the organization would visit Bankura.
Official Response
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari denied any BJP involvement in the incident. They stated that an FIR has been registered against five individuals, three of whom have been arrested; the remaining two will also be arrested. "The BJP has no connection to this. These are all criminals. Action will be taken in accordance with the law," the official said.
It has also emerged that Abdul Hafiz had to move to Kolkata for security reasons following this incident.
