A case has been registered against Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi under the SC/ST Act in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. He has been accused of giving a casteist spin to the 'purification' incident that took place at Ramlila Maidan and linking it to the practice of untouchability.
The complaint was filed by members of the 'Shri Ram Dharmarth Seva Samiti,' the very organization that had carried out the purification ritual at Ramlila Maidan. The case against Rahul Gandhi was registered at the Kotwali police station on Sunday night.
Amit Kumar, a member of the SC community, alleged that during a press conference in Delhi on August 11, Rahul Gandhi gave a casteist color to what was merely a routine cleaning operation at Ramlila Maidan, labeling it as an act of untouchability and a crime. Nainital SSP TC Manjunath stated that the FIR was registered after Amit submitted all necessary evidence to substantiate his allegations. The investigation into the matter will be conducted under the supervision of ASP Amit Saini.
