Chief Minister defends Nimbalkar in Phaltan doctor suicide case; 'Don't play political games, justice will be served' - firm assurance

Satara: Representative
October 26, 2025
The unfortunate suicide of a young female doctor at the Sub-District Hospital in Phaltan in Satara district has created a stir in the political atmosphere of Maharashtra. This incident has not only raised questions about the negligence of the health department and the police system, but is also drawing strong reactions from political leaders. The suicide note written by the doctor after the suicide mentions that Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) Gopal Badne has been accused of rape four times. Apart from this, it also mentions that the landlord Prashant Bankar has physically and mentally tortured him. While the name of former MP Ranjitsinh Naik Nimbalkar is being linked in this case, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis gave his full support to Nimbalkar by directly commenting during his visit to Phaltan today. He warned the opposition, firmly assuring them that 'my younger sister will get justice, but don't play political games'.
Background of the incident: Tragic end of a young doctor
This 30-year-old female doctor, who had been working at the Phaltan Upazila Hospital for two years, committed suicide by consuming poisonous medicine at her residence on the night of October 24. After the body was found, the case took a more serious turn due to the suicide note written on the palm of her left hand. In the note, she clearly accused PSI Gopal Badne of 'raping her four times'. Apart from this, she also mentioned that her landlord, police officer Prashant Bankar, had constantly harassed her. Notably, this note also contains a complaint that a 'personal assistant of the MP' was pressuring the accused coming to the hospital to give a 'fitness certificate'. This mention created a stir in political circles and the name of former BJP MP Ranjitsinh Naik Nimbalkar was added.
This doctor had called her family members before her death and informed them about the reason for the incident. When her brother filed a complaint with the police, the Phaltan police took immediate action and arrested PSI Badne and Bankar. Both have been suspended and the district superintendent of police has announced a special investigation team. However, since there are allegations of political interference in the case, it is likely that the High Court will also take cognizance of this.
Political controversy: Opposition attacks, Mahayuti defends
The case has created a new controversy in Maharashtra politics. Thackeray's Shiv Sena leader and Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Ambadas Danve directly accused former BJP MP Ranjitsinh Naik Nimbalkar, his brother and Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) MLA Sanjaykumar Langde. Danve said, "There was pressure from political and police officials in this case. Pressure was being put on the doctor to change the medical report. The Nimbalkar brothers and Langde hatched this conspiracy." He demanded that an independent CBI probe be conducted into the case and the culprits be severely punished.
On the other hand, the leaders of the Mahayuti vehemently denied these allegations. Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana leader and former MLA Bharat Gogavale said, "Nimbalkar has nothing to do with this case. This is a political conspiracy. The doctor will get justice." BJP leader and minister Shivendraraje Bhosale also said that the opposition is trying to 'put butter on the dead body'. In this context, everyone's attention was drawn to Chief Minister Fadnavis's Phaltan visit, especially due to the presence of Nimbalkar.
Chief Minister's Phaltan visit: Support for Nimbalkar, warning to the opposition
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who arrived in Phaltan this morning, organized a public meeting at the grounds of Yashwantrao Chavan High School. Former MP Ranjitsinh Naik Nimbalkar, Public Works Minister Shivendraraje Bhosale and Tourism Minister Shambhuraj Desai were present at this meeting. While inaugurating various development projects in the meeting, Fadnavis directly commented on the doctor suicide case. He said, "The day before yesterday, one of our younger sisters, who was a doctor, died very unfortunately. She committed suicide and wrote the reason on her hand. The police immediately arrested the accused. The whole truth is coming out. We will give her justice in any case. This is our responsibility."
Responding to political criticism over Nimbalkar's name, Fadnavis clarified, "Recently, there has been a condemnable attempt to inject politics into everything. The names of Ranjit Dada (Nimbalkar) and Sachin Dada are being inculcated without any reason. Maharashtra knows what Devabhau (Nimbalkar) is. If there was even such a doubt, I would not have cancelled this program. I do not look at parties, individuals or politics. When it comes to the issue of a younger sister, I do not compromise. But I will not tolerate those who eat butter on the scalp of a corpse. Understand that I am one of those who will answer them."
Addressing Nimbalkar, Fadnavis said with a smile, "Ranjit Dada, your eyes may be watering, but don't be discouraged. Phaltan will get all the development works, but don't ask for a district now. Your demands are like the tail of a Maruti - they never end. But this is good, because this is how a true leader fights for development." This statement left the assembly speechless.
Question mark on the health department: Need for doctors' safety
This case has raised a big question on the safety of women in the health department.
