Chinese officials' outrage, calling 'Arunachal part of China'; Indian passenger stopped on London-Japan flight

Mumbai/New Delhi, November 24, 2025:-A very serious incident that directly challenges India's sovereignty has taken place in China. An Indian woman, Pema Wang Thongdok, born in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh, was detained by Chinese immigration officials at Shanghai Pudong International Airport for more than 18 hours. The reason? They declared the woman's Indian passport 'invalid' because according to Chinese officials, Arunachal Pradesh is part of China!
Pema Wang Thongdok was flying from London to Tokyo (Japan) on November 21, 2025. Her flight had a layover of about three hours in Shanghai. As soon as she landed at the airport, Chinese officials checked her passport and confiscated it after seeing that it showed her birthplace in Arunachal Pradesh. After that, she was taken to a separate room and interrogated continuously. Pema has alleged that he was not given drinking water and food on time.
Finally, with the diplomatic help of Japan and the intervention of the Indian Embassy, ??after a long wait of 18 hours, he was allowed to proceed. Pema wrote a detailed post about this on his ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) account and said, “I am an Indian citizen, my passport is completely valid. But China does not consider Arunachal as ours, so I had to endure this harassment.”
This incident is likely to further strain India-China relations. The Ministry of External Affairs has lodged a strong protest with China over this and an official statement is expected soon. India has always insisted that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India, while China considers it as ‘South Tibet’.
