Chlorine Gas Leak at Godhani Water Treatment Plant in Nagpur; 52 Hospitalized, Situation Under Control
Nagpur: At least 52 residents were hospitalized due to respiratory issues following a chlorine gas leak at the water treatment plant near Collector Colony in Godhani during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. Twelve of them have already been discharged, and all patients are in stable condition; the affected individuals include four minors.
Harish Kalsekar, Senior Police Inspector of Mankapur Police Station, stated that an entry regarding the incident has been made in the station diary. No formal case has been registered yet, but an inquiry will be conducted.
The leak caused respiratory distress among local residents. Many were admitted to Mayo Hospital and nearby private hospitals. When *Times of India* representatives visited the site on Monday morning, the smell of chlorine was still perceptible near the tanker, though the situation was under control. Sources indicated that the concentration of gas in the area was gradually subsiding.
Teams from Orange City Water Works (OCW), the NDRF, and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) conducted a joint operation to move people from the affected area to safety and bring the situation under control. OCW officials clarified that the plant falls under the jurisdiction of the Godhani Gram Panchayat and is not owned by the NMC or OCW. Nevertheless, during the emergency, the OCW team assisted in controlling the leak using SCBA sets. Police and officials from the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health commended the prompt response of the OCW staff.
