Cloud burst again in Jammu and Kashmir, landslide disrupts life, heavy rain and storm in many districts

Srinagar, May 2, 2025: The weather has once again wreaked havoc in Jammu and Kashmir. A cloudburst in Ramban district on Friday morning caused massive destruction, due to which landslides and flash floods completely disrupted life. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rain and storm conditions prevailed in many parts of the state due to the effect of an active western disturbance.
A cloudburst in Ramban caused a landslide on National Highway-44, bringing traffic to a complete standstill. The local administration said that several vehicles were buried under the debris in this accident and relief and rescue operations have been started rapidly. Due to heavy rains in Reashi district also, the water level of Chenab river rose to dangerous levels, due to which rafting activities were suspended for a day.
The weather department has issued a cyclone alert for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand with light to moderate rain and lightning for the next few days. Heavy rains in districts like Srinagar, Doda and Kishtwar inundated roads and many residential areas. Local residents have been advised to be cautious near slopes and construction areas as minor landslides are expected.
Many houses have been damaged and some people are reported missing due to the recent landslide in Ramban. The administration has set up relief camps in the affected areas and NDRF teams are engaged in rescue operations.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced to visit the affected areas and sought additional assistance from the central government for disaster relief. He said, "Our priority is the safety of the people and rehabilitation of the affected families."
Meteorologists say that the weather will remain active in the western Himalayan region till the first week of May, due to which rain and storm conditions may persist. Locals and travellers are requested to keep an eye on the weather forecast and stay in safe places.
It is also worth mentioning that this year Jammu and Kashmir had witnessed a decline in rainfall, but recent events have once again highlighted the uncertainty of the weather. Electricity and communication services have also been partially disrupted in the affected areas, which the administration is working fast to restore.
