Confusion over appointment of Opposition Leader in Maharashtra Winter Session continues; Speaker Ram Shinde's firm stance
Nagpur, December 7, 2025: Confusion over the appointment of the Opposition Leader continues in the backdrop of the Winter Session of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Although a proposal has been submitted for appointment to this post, it is pending. Speaking to the media in Nagpur today, Speaker of the Legislative Council Ram Shinde said that a decision on this proposal will be taken at the appropriate time. However, he did not clarify whether this decision will be taken in the Winter Session.
The post of Opposition Leader has been vacant in Maharashtra since the formation of the current government. In previous sessions too, work was carried out without making this appointment. Now that the Winter Session is on the verge of beginning, pressure from the opposition parties for this post has increased. In his reply to the media, Speaker Shinde said, "A proposal has been submitted regarding the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition. This proposal is pending and a decision will be taken on it at the appropriate time. How can we say today what will happen in the house tomorrow? There is no place to answer constitutional questions like the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition... It is not necessary to continue the old practices and traditions."
Deputy Speaker Dr. Neelam Gorhe was also present at the time. When journalists asked about the old practices and traditions in the state, Speaker Shinde clarified that it is not mandatory to continue such traditions. This statement has sparked discussions in political circles. This is a constitutional post of the Leader of the Opposition, which is responsible for bringing all the opposition parties together, raising questions on the government's decisions, speaking on issues of public interest and maintaining balance in various committees. The vacancy of this post cannot be ruled out as it may affect the proceedings of the session.
Political analysts are of the opinion that this appointment is likely to be made in the winter session, as this will enable the opposition parties to play a more effective role. However, uncertainty remains due to Speaker Shinde's phrase 'appropriate time'. A heated debate on this issue is expected as soon as the session begins.
