Delhi Bomb Blast: Congress hits out at central government, 'Why was terrorism identified in 50 hours so late?'

New Delhi: The entire country was shaken by the bomb blast near the Red Fort in the country's capital Delhi on Tuesday (November 12) afternoon. Although two people were injured in the blast, its political consequences have dealt a major blow to the Modi government at the Center. The opposition party Congress, while harshly criticizing the government over the incident, has accused the government of taking 50 hours to identify the bomb blast as a 'terrorist attack'. Moreover, questions have also been raised about not using a single strong word against Pakistan. The matter has heated up the political debate over the issue of security, and the Congress has also pointed out the failure of the government's intelligence agencies.
Background to the incident: Shocking explosion near the Red Fort
A bomb exploded near a two-wheeler in the historic Red Fort area of ??Delhi at 2 pm. According to preliminary information, the Delhi Police has initially suspected that the blast was caused by a homemade bomb or an IED (Improvised Explosive Device). Two tourists were injured in the blast, who have been admitted to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, major casualties were avoided due to the low intensity of the blast, but the incident has raised questions about the security situation in Delhi.
Delhi Police and the National Security Guard (NSG) immediately rushed to the spot and covered the blast. An investigation is underway based on CCTV footage and witness statements, and the suspects are being sought. Preliminary investigations suggest the involvement of Pakistan-based terrorist organizations, which has linked the attack to cross-border terrorism. However, the central government initially called the attack an 'explosion due to unknown reasons', which has raised doubts among the opposition.
Congress's aggressive criticism: '50 hours of delay and Pakistan's silence'
The Congress party has launched a strong attack on the Modi government over this incident. Speaking at a press conference, party spokesperson Supriya Shrinet said, "It took the Modi government 50 hours to acknowledge the Delhi blast as a 'terrorist attack'. The Home Ministry recognized it as a terrorist attack only 50 hours after the blast. What does this mean? Did the government not recognize terrorism? And not a single word was uttered against Pakistan. Is such an attack possible in India without Pakistan? This is not a mistake, but a deliberate weakness."
Shrinet further said, "After the 2019 Pahalgam attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had declared that any terrorist attack would be considered an 'act of war'. But now it seems that that statement has been forgotten. The Modi government is limited to slogans only. Is the country's security being played with just to build its image? Every Indian citizen should ask this question." This statement has created excitement among Congress workers, and the hashtag #ModiOnSecurity is trending on social media.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also took a dig at the government by posting on Twitter (now ex). He said, "Bomb blasts in Delhi and government's silence! Just a photoshoot in the name of security? It proves that people's safety is not a priority. It's time to hold the government accountable." This post has received lakhs of views so far.
Failure of intelligence agencies? Weakness of intelligence
Shrinet's criticism also focused on the role of intelligence agencies. She said, "Why was there no intelligence information about this attack earlier? What were the IB (Intelligence Bureau), Delhi Police and Union Home Minister Amit Shah doing? The country's security is not in safe hands. The Modi government has not improved the system despite several terrorist attacks in the last decade. This is a big mistake and the people will have to be held accountable for it."
There has been no direct response from the central government on these allegations yet. However, BJP leader and Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur has indirectly responded to the opposition. He said, "The opposition wants to use every incident for politics. We are investigating and the guilty will be punished severely. We will remind the opposition that our action against terrorism is strict." Thakur's statement has also increased the controversy, with the Congress calling it a 'cover for failure'.
Political atmosphere heats up: Role of other parties
Other opposition parties have also become active in this matter. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal raised questions on the role of Delhi Police. He said, "The responsibility of security in Delhi lies with the Centre, but we are used to expose the failures. The people should get justice." Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar has also announced to raise this issue in Parliament.
On the other hand, the BJP is calling it a 'political ploy by the opposition'. The party's national spokesperson Sambit Patra said, "Congress has always done politics on national security. We are firm against terrorism and will expose this attack as well." The debate is likely to make the security issue a prominent issue in the winter session of Parliament as well.
Future challenges: Need to strengthen security system
