Discharged from hospital after Nanded attack; Sukhbir Singh Badal says – “I have never been afraid of such cowardly attacks, nor will I ever be!”
Nanded: Shiromani Akali Dal President and former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, Sukhbir Singh Badal—who survived a life-threatening *kirpan* (ceremonial sword) attack on Thursday (August 13) at the historic Mata Sahib Gurudwara premises in Mugat, near Nanded city—was discharged from Yashosai Hospital on Friday (August 14) afternoon. Doctors discharged him following successful treatment on his right hand. Upon leaving the hospital, he spoke to the media and sternly rebuked the attackers and subversive elements.
Badal said, “My father, the late Parkash Singh Badal, never surrendered before such subversive forces. Throughout his life, he respected all castes and religions and upheld the spirit of brotherhood in Punjab. Certain anti-social elements want to create unrest in Punjab. They have attacked me at holy religious sites twice—first at the Golden Temple in Amritsar and now at the sacred Mata Sahib Gurudwara in Nanded. But I have the blessings of Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj. I have never been afraid of such cowardly attacks, nor will I ever be!”

According to eyewitnesses, on Thursday afternoon, as Badal was descending the steps after paying his respects, a 62-year-old lawyer named Jaspal Singh rushed towards him shouting, "Surrender, surrender!" Upon seeing the *kirpan* in the man's hand, Police Inspector Santosh Kendre of the Maharashtra Police's Special Protection Unit acted as a human shield, tackling and apprehending the attacker on the spot. During the scuffle, Badal sustained an injury to his right hand, and Inspector Kendre was also injured.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spoke to MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal over the phone to inquire about his well-being. Chief Minister Fadnavis took a detailed review of the security arrangements from Nanded's Special Deputy Inspector General of Police Shahaji Umap, District Collector Rahul Kardile, and Superintendent of Police Nilabh Rohan, and issued instructions for strict action against the attacker and the conspiracy behind the attack.
