Ensure Justice for Agniveer Families; Otherwise, Face Heavy Fine – High Court Takes Firm Stand

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has sternly reprimanded the Central Government over the delay in filing a response to a petition filed by the family of an Agniveer who was martyred during ‘Operation Sindoor’. The Court has warned that a heavy fine will be imposed if an affidavit is not submitted within the stipulated timeframe.
The petition was heard before a bench comprising Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Hiten Venegaonkar. The petition was filed by the mother of Agniveer Murli Naik, seeking post-mortem benefits for his family on par with those accorded to regular soldiers.
According to the petition, Murli Naik lost his life during cross-border firing in Jammu and Kashmir. However, the petition highlights the grievance that while regular soldiers' families receive pensions and other benefits, these are currently not being extended to the families of Agniveers.
The Court expressed its displeasure over the failure to file a response, noting that it had already issued a notice to the Central Government regarding this matter. A clear warning was issued stating that a penalty would be imposed if the requisite affidavit is not filed before the next hearing.
Furthermore, the Court directed the State Government to submit its submissions as well; the next hearing for this case is scheduled for June 18.
The petition alleges that the Agnipath Scheme creates discrimination between Agniveers and regular soldiers, and demands that the families of martyred Agniveers be granted equal rights and benefits.
