FDA inspects High Court canteen following court order; shut down until further notice due to irregularities
Mumbai, July 31: While the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) aggressive enforcement drive has caused a stir among food establishments across the state, the Mumbai High Court's canteen has now also faced the impact of such an inspection. Following directives from the High Court, a team led by FDA chief Tukaram Mundhe inspected the court's canteen. Due to certain deficiencies found during the inspection, the canteen has been temporarily closed until further orders.
The High Court had recently issued clear instructions to the FDA to inspect the canteens at Mantralaya and the Mumbai High Court—and submit a report—rather than focusing action solely on private hotels and restaurants. This order was issued during the hearing of a petition filed by a hotel in Navi Mumbai, which had objected to the sudden suspension of its license. At that time, the court had raised the question of whether inspections were also being conducted at government and semi-government establishments.
Subsequently, the FDA team inspected the High Court canteen. The canteen was shut down after irregularities were detected during the inspection. However, the Mumbai Bar Association clarified that they had not received any formal notice or closure order from the FDA. The Association stated that they had voluntarily suspended canteen services temporarily as a precautionary measure regarding hygiene.
So far, the licenses of nearly 100 food establishments have been suspended during the special drive currently underway in the state. The enforcement actions led by Tukaram Mundhe have created panic among hotel operators, some of whom had even approached the High Court. Now, the action taken against the High Court's own canteen has sparked further discussion.
