Maharaj took Samadhi in Dongargarh
New Delhi: Famous Jain saint Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj breathed his last on Sunday after Sallekhana at Chandragiri Tirtha in Dongargarh in Rajnandgaon district of Chhattisgarh. This day is very sad for the entire Jain community. According to a statement from the shrine, Sallekhana is a Jain religious practice that involves voluntary fasting unto death for spiritual purification.
Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj was the most famous saint of the Digambar Jain community. Saint Acharya Vidyasagar was a disciple of Acharya Gyansagar. When Acharya Gyan Sagar attained Samadhi, he handed over his post of Acharya to Muni Vidyasagar. Then Muni Vidyasagar became Acharya on 22 November 1972 at the age of just 26.
Acharya Vidyasagar was born in 1946 on Sharad Purnima day on 10 October in village Chikkodi in Belagavi district of Karnataka. Vidyasagar's father's name was Mallappaji Ashtage and mother's name was Mrs. Ashtage. At home everyone used to call Vidyasagar as Neelu. Let us tell you that Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj has given more than 500 initiations till now.
Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj's mother Smt. and father Mallappaji had also received initiation from him and then they took Samadhi.
Acharya Vidyasagar was widely recognized for his deep spiritual knowledge.
In 1968 at the age of 22, Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj was initiated as a Digambar Sadhu by Acharya Gyansagar Ji Maharaj and then in 1972 he attained the status of Acharya.
Throughout his life, Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj remained deeply engaged in the study and application of Jain scriptures and philosophy.
He was also known for his command over Sanskrit and other languages. He has written many enlightening commentaries, poems and spiritual texts.
Some of his widely recognized works in the Jain community include Niranjan Shatak, Bhavana Shatak, Parish Jaya Shatak, Suniti Shatak and Shramana Shatak.
He also led the campaign to promote Hindi and make the justice system in any state its official language.
On February 11, Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj was honored as the God of the Universe in the Guinness World Records.
