Farmers in Karnataka Outraged by Cauvery Water Management Authority's Decision
Karnataka: A major uproar has erupted in Karnataka following the decision to release Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu. The Cauvery Water Management Authority rejected Karnataka's plea and upheld the order to release 3,500 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for a period of 15 days. Angered by this decision, farmers in the Mandya and Mysuru districts have taken to the streets.
Large-scale protests have been underway in both districts since Thursday. Farmers have initiated 'rasta roko' (road blockade) protests on highways, disrupting normal life. Concerns are being raised that releasing water while reservoirs are already facing a shortage—thereby ignoring Karnataka's own needs—could plunge farmers into a severe crisis.
In this context, Karnataka BJP President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra announced a massive protest in Mandya on Friday. Speaking to reporters in Shivamogga, he sharply criticized the state government. "The government has completely failed to protect the interests of farmers in the Cauvery basin. Instead of standing firmly behind Karnataka's farmers, the government appears to be siding with Tamil Nadu," Vijayendra stated.
He urged the state government to forcefully present its case before the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee. He also warned that the party would intensify the agitation if necessary.
Meanwhile, activists from the 'Karnataka Rakshana Vedike' also staged a protest in Ramanagara against the directives of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee. The farmers' anger has been further fueled by the earlier rejection of Karnataka's request to postpone the deadline for water release. The dispute over Cauvery water has been ongoing for a long time and tends to intensify every year during the monsoon season. In the current situation, all eyes are focused on how the interests of farmers in Karnataka will be protected.
