Farmers strongly oppose Shaktipeeth Highway in Sangli: Thousands of all-party march to save fertile land

Sangli, February 27, 2026 - Farmers in Sangli district are strongly opposing the state government's proposed Shaktipeeth Highway project. Thousands of farmers took to the streets today to protect the fertile land in the Krishna and Warna valleys in the Ishwarpur area. Under the leadership of the Shaktipeeth Anti-Shakti Sangharsh Samiti, all political parties and organizations came together and took out a huge march on the Tehsil office. This movement has shaken the city, and the farmers warned the government by shouting slogans like 'Save the farmers, save the land'.
The march began at 11 am today by saluting the statue of Krantisinh Nana Patil in front of the Panchayat Samiti. No political party flag was used in this march. All the leaders and activists participated as farmers. The march reached the Tehsil office through the main roads of the city. After the march, it turned into a meeting, in which the farmers expressed their feelings.
The farmers expressed fear that the Shaktipeeth highway will cause major damage to their farmlands as it will pass through the fertile belt of Krishna and Warna rivers. "This land, earned by generations of hard work, will be destroyed and entire villages will be destroyed," the protesters said. The Sangharsh Samiti has clarified that the fight is non-political and is for the protection of Baliraja.
After the march, the delegation met the tehsildars and submitted a memorandum of demands. The memorandum demands that the highway project be cancelled and that land should not be acquired without the consent of the farmers.
This project has previously faced major opposition in Kolhapur and Solapur districts as well. The protest in Sangli has increased pressure on the government, and the demand to reconsider the project is gaining momentum. The Shetkari Sangharsh Samiti has started preparations for further protests and said that it will continue with large-scale protests if necessary.
