Harish Rana, who has been unconscious for 13 years, has the right to ‘die with dignity’

New Delhi: In a historic verdict, the Supreme Court has allowed passive euthanasia to Harish Rana, who has been unconscious for 13 years. According to this verdict, his life-saving treatment has been stopped.
Harish Rana (aged 31) was in a permanent vegetative state after an accident in 2013. He had been taken care of by his elderly parents for many years after suffering a serious brain injury. Doctors had also said that the chances of his recovery were very low.
A bench of Justices J. B. Pardiwala and K. V. Vishwanathan of the Supreme Court gave this verdict. Justice Pardiwala is also said to have become emotional while giving the verdict. In this case, the pain of the family, the condition of the patient and the right to live and die with dignity were all considered.
The court has directed AIIMS Hospital in Delhi to complete the necessary medical procedures and provide life-saving treatment.
According to experts, this decision will be an important milestone in the legal process of euthanasia in India. Passive euthanasia means stopping life-prolonging treatment or equipment of a patient, thereby allowing the person to die naturally.
This verdict is not just the story of a family's struggle but is likely to reignite the discussion across the country on the issue of "right to die with dignity".
