Has an Uncontested Election in Baramati Been Averted? Congress to Withdraw Candidacy if FIR is Filed Regarding Ajit Pawar's Accident!

It now appears that the by-election for the Baramati Assembly constituency is set to become a spirited contest. Following the tragic death of the late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash—which left the seat vacant—the 'Mahayuti' (Grand Alliance) had fielded Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar as its candidate, and efforts were underway to ensure an uncontested election. The Sharad Pawar faction and the Uddhav Thackeray faction had both publicly declared their support for Sunetra Pawar. However, the Congress party has introduced a major twist by suddenly fielding its own candidate.
The Congress party has nominated Adv. Akash More (son of former MP Vijay More) as its candidate. Akash More has clarified that his candidacy would be reconsidered if the Maharashtra government officially registers an FIR regarding the accident involving Ajit Pawar. He asserted that the accident was not merely a coincidence and that it is imperative to bring the truth behind it to light. He also alleged that the government has not yet taken any concrete action in this matter.
Akash More stated, "Baramati and Maharashtra have lost a pivotal leader. Since this matter falls under the purview of the Home Minister, the government must give it serious consideration. We were political opponents of 'Ajit-dada,' but we stood with him on issues of development. If the government registers an FIR regarding this accident, we will consider withdrawing our candidacy." He added that he has apprised the Congress State President, Harshvardhan Sapkal, of this stance, and that the latter has also expressed his concurrence.
Akash More had previously contested the election against Ajit Pawar on a Congress ticket in 2014 as well. He clarified that the current election is being fought to uphold democracy and to oppose the ideology of the BJP.
Election Schedule:
Polling: April 23, 2026
Results: May 4, 2026
Sunetra Pawar is expected to file her nomination papers on April 6. Given this decision by the Congress party, all signs point to a direct electoral face-off in Baramati.
