Havoc Across the Country Due to Floods and Cloudbursts!
New Delhi/Mumbai, July 21, 2026: Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered flood-like situations in several states across the country. Regions including Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh have suffered significant loss of life and property due to floods, cloudbursts, and landslides. So far, 28 people have lost their lives across various states, and lakhs have been affected. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'Red Alert' for several locations.
Jammu & Kashmir: Highest Loss of Life
In Jammu & Kashmir, 23 people have died over the past two days due to heavy rains and cloudbursts. The Poonch and Rajouri districts have been the worst hit. Seven people remain missing, and search operations are underway. Continuous rain is hampering rescue and relief efforts.
Assam: 580 Villages Submerged
The flood situation in Assam is critical. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 3.63 lakh people across 15 districts have been affected. A total of 580 villages are completely submerged, and 10,362 hectares of agricultural land have suffered damage. Several rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are flowing above the danger mark. Five people have lost their lives due to the floods.
Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh
In Uttarakhand, landslides have led to the closure of 150 roads. The Char Dham Yatra has been temporarily suspended. An 8-year-old boy died after being swept away by the Saryu River. All schools in the state have been closed.
The havoc caused by rain continues in Himachal Pradesh as well. Floods and cloudbursts in Kinnaur and Chamba districts have damaged roads, bridges, and communication infrastructure. Schools and colleges in several districts have been shut down. Uttar Pradesh: Red Alert
A red alert has been issued for 12 districts in Uttar Pradesh. Districts such as Bareilly, Bijnor, Rampur, and Shahjahanpur have recorded rainfall exceeding 150 mm. There is a forecast of lightning and gusty winds.
Administrative Appeal: Citizens are urged to remain vigilant, stay away from rivers and drains, and follow the administration's instructions. Relief and rescue teams are active, and relief operations are underway in the affected areas. Given the likelihood of further rainfall in the coming days, citizens across the state are advised to exercise caution.
