Higher Education Alone Is Insufficient; Experience Also Mandatory for Government Jobs – Supreme Court

New Delhi: Delivering a significant verdict regarding government employment, the Supreme Court of India has clarified that merely possessing a higher academic degree is not sufficient; having the requisite experience for the specific post is also mandatory.
The Court stated that, in the recruitment process, a candidate cannot be deemed eligible solely on the basis of possessing superior degrees or higher academic scores without fulfilling the fundamental eligibility criteria prescribed for the position.
While making these observations, the Court clarified in a specific case that experience constitutes an essential component, and it would be erroneous to consider a candidate eligible in the absence of it. Higher education may serve as merely an additional (preferential) qualification, but it cannot substitute for the fundamental prerequisites.
The Court also expressed displeasure regarding the recruitment process in question, observing that if selections are made without strict adherence to the established rules, the entire process is liable to be quashed.
This verdict conveys a significant message to candidates aspiring for government jobs, once again underscoring the fact that merely obtaining a degree is not enough; practical experience and relevant skills are equally vital.
