Initially avoided an India visit, now heading to Delhi on their own... What has changed for Bangladesh's Tariq Rahman?

The possibility of a positive shift in relations between Bangladesh and India has emerged. Previously, Bangladesh's Prime Minister Tariq Rahman had declined invitations to visit India twice. However, reports now indicate that he is preparing for a visit to Delhi on his own initiative.
Tensions had arisen between the two nations due to border disputes, the Teesta River issue, close ties with China, and India granting asylum to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina fled to India following student protests in 2024 and has been residing there since; this is considered the primary cause of the strain between the two countries.
However, the situation now appears to be changing. Discussions regarding a visit to India by the Bangladeshi Prime Minister have commenced. A source stated, "Talks have resumed after some initial hurdles. Planning for Tariq Rahman's Delhi visit is underway, and the agenda for the program is currently being drafted."
While the visit has not yet been officially announced, it is speculated that it could take place in late November or early December. A bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to occur during this time.
Earlier, Tariq Rahman had extended birthday greetings to Prime Minister Modi. He wrote, "Heartfelt birthday wishes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. May your dedicated service to the people of India continue with good health and enthusiasm." Modi responded, "Prime Minister Tariq Rahman, thank you for your warm wishes. I appreciate your kind words."
Following the BRICS summit, Bangladesh has also expressed a desire to maintain good relations with India. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir clarified, "We wish to move towards a new phase of relations, and this should be achieved through bilateral dialogue."
Tariq Rahman is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly on September 21. Greater clarity regarding the Delhi visit is likely to emerge after this.
Political analysts say that this visit could prove significant in normalizing relations between the two countries.
