Mumbai: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis (who also serves as the Finance Minister) has made important announcements to boost the sports sector in Maharashtra’s Budget 2026. The focus has been on developing a comprehensive sports plan through the ‘Mission Lakshyavedh’ scheme to prepare for India’s 2026 Olympic host and increase the participation of athletes from Maharashtra. These announcements will give a boost to the training, infrastructure and talent development of athletes in the state, which will increase the chances of winning more medals at the international level.
Key announcements:
Funds and infrastructure: A huge fund will be provided for stadiums, modern gyms and accommodation facilities for athletes. Special provisions to speed up stalled sports complex projects at the taluka and district levels. Existing infrastructure will also be modernised.
New initiatives and centres: 8 high-performance centres are already operational at the state level for athletics, badminton, boxing, weightlifting, hockey, wrestling, archery, shooting, rowing, sailing, lawn tennis and table tennis. Apart from this, four additional high-performance centres will be started soon, where world-class training will be imparted.
Programme and structure: Three-phase structure to identify talent from remote areas and provide a platform to athletes. 25 divisional level sports excellence centres and 96 quality development centres at district level will be set up across the state.
The main objective of these announcements is that Maharashtra athletes should play a bigger role in the 2026 Olympics and win more international medals. Fadnavis said, "Sports is the energy of youth. With this budget, we are laying a strong foundation for the Olympics." This step in the sports sector has instilled enthusiasm among the youth of the state, and preparations for future competitions will be in full swing.
