
Maharashtra government's historic decision, becomes the first state to provide relief to lakhs of livestock farmers
Mumbai: The state cabinet has taken a historic decision to give agricultural equivalent status to animal husbandry. This will provide great relief to lakhs of livestock farmers in the state. Maharashtra has become the first state in the country to give such status. According to this decision, all livestock-based businesses will now be considered equivalent to agricultural businesses, announced Animal Husbandry Minister Smt. Pankaja Munde in the legislature on Friday, July 11.
What will be the benefit to livestock farmers?
This policy reform will provide great relief to livestock farmers engaged in dairy farming, poultry farming, goat farming and boar farming, and they will also be able to avail new concessions. The cabinet discussed in detail the proposal submitted by the department regarding giving agricultural equivalent status to animal husbandry and took various important decisions.
In these decisions, it was approved to levy electricity rates under the agricultural category instead of the 'Agriculture and Other' category for poultry farming businesses with a capacity of 25,000 meat poultry birds or 50,000 egg-producing poultry birds and a hatchery unit with a capacity of 45,000, for animal husbandry businesses with a capacity of 100 milch animals, 500 sheep or goat farming and 200 boars. In order to bring uniformity in the Gram Panchayat tax rate by considering animal husbandry business as an agricultural business rather than a separate business, it was approved to levy tax at the same rate at which agricultural business is taxed.
Will interest concession be available for loans?
Apart from this, the cabinet also approved to provide concession in interest rate on loans to animal husbandry businesses like agriculture. It was also approved to provide concession for setting up solar pumps and other solar sets for poultry farming and other animal husbandry businesses like agriculture. The cabinet has also approved additional allocation for the implementation of this policy.
75 lakh families will benefit
This decision will promote sustainable agriculture, generate employment in rural areas and increase the financial stability of farmers. About 75 lakh families in the state are involved in animal husbandry, which will directly benefit them. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister and Minister (Finance and Planning) Ajit Pawar have expressed confidence that this historic decision will bring about a revolution in the animal husbandry sector in Maharashtra.
The Maharashtra Economic Advisory Council has submitted a roadmap report to the government to take Maharashtra's economy to $1 trillion by 2028. To achieve this goal, the Economic Advisory Council has identified 8 components that can boost income growth. This includes the 'Agriculture and Allied' component. Currently, the share of the agriculture sector in the state's gross domestic product is 12%, and the share of livestock income in the total agricultural income is 24%. In its 2021 report, the NITI Aayog had recommended measures to increase the participation of the livestock industry in the gross domestic product of the country or the state.
