Mahayuti Government Excludes 7.1 Million Women from 'Ladki Bahin' Scheme; Deepika Chavan Launches Fierce Criticism

Nashik: The Mahayuti government has deemed a staggering 7.1 million women ineligible for the 'Ladki Bahin' (Beloved Sister) scheme. This scheme, which was announced with great fanfare during the election period, is now facing intense criticism from the opposition as a large number of women are being excluded under the pretext of 'verification.'
Former MLA Deepika Chavan has launched a scathing attack on the government. "Announcing a scheme to garner votes during the elections, only to oust millions of women from it the moment the elections are over, constitutes a blatant betrayal of women's trust," Chavan stated.
She further added, "The public will never forgive a government that plays such games with the very women who brought it to power. It is a case of 'use and discard'—using the doctor while the need persists, only to let him die once the cure is found. The women's votes have been subjected to political plunder."
Chavan also raised a pertinent question: approximately ?21,000 crore has already been distributed to the 7.1 million women who have now been declared ineligible. If they are indeed ineligible now, then under whose authority and responsibility was this public money spent? She expressed apprehension that, given the frequent changes to the scheme's eligibility criteria, the government might be preparing to gradually wind down the entire initiative.
The 'Ladki Bahin' scheme was originally introduced to empower women and lay the foundation for their self-reliance. However, the government's decision—taken after assuming power—to exclude a massive number of women under the guise of verification has sparked widespread resentment among the female population.
