Major Blow to Illegal Liquor Rackets: Sub-Divisional Magistrate to Chair Committee Instead of Tehsildar
Nagpur/Amravati: The Government of Maharashtra has taken a significant decision to curb the illegal production and sale of liquor across the state. The committees at the Taluka level have been reconstituted, and the chairmanship of these committees has now been entrusted to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate.
Previously, in accordance with a Government Resolution issued in 2005, this committee operated under the chairmanship of the Tehsildar. However, under Section 93 of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act, 1949, the authority to initiate preventive action regarding liquor prohibition lies with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate. Acting upon the recommendations of a study group led by the Divisional Commissioner of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the Home Department has revised the composition of the committee.
The composition of the new committee will be as follows:
Chairperson: Sub-Divisional Magistrate
Member Secretary: Officer-in-Charge of the concerned Police Station (Thanedar)
Members: Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Tehsildar, Deputy Superintendent and Inspector of the State Excise Department, and Medical Officer
Ex-officio Members: All elected women representatives from the Panchayat Samiti
It will be mandatory for the committee to convene at least one meeting per month. These meetings will serve to review whether illegal country liquor stills and liquor sales within the Taluka have been completely eradicated. In the event of any lapse regarding these illegal activities, the concerned Thanedar and Excise Inspectors will be held directly accountable.
The District Collector is empowered to appoint additional members to the committee, subject to the approval of the Guardian Minister. Directives have been issued to the Director General of Police and the Commissioner of State Excise to ensure the immediate implementation of this decision.
This decision is being hailed as a concrete step taken by the State Government toward the complete eradication of illegal liquor rackets.
