Major Relief for Nepal! India to Supply 18 Hours of Electricity Daily; Team of 54 Experts Also to Assist
Kathmandu: India has taken a significant decision to increase electricity supply to crisis-hit Nepal. The Union Ministry of Power has approved the export of electricity to the Nepal Electricity Authority for 18 hours daily during the period from September 13, 2026, to December 31, 2026.
Recent severe floods in Nepal have caused extensive damage to hydroelectric projects, reducing the country's power generation capacity. Consequently, this assistance from India will be crucial in meeting the rising demand for electricity.
Power Supply via Two Transmission Lines
India will supply electricity to Nepal through two key transmission lines. A maximum of 600 MW of power can be exported via the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit line, while up to 54 MW can be supplied through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line.
Review Scheduled for December
A review regarding the volume of electricity to be exported to Nepal from January 2027 onwards will be conducted in December 2026. The quantity for future exports will be determined thereafter. Domestic power generation has declined due to the flood-induced damage to Nepal's hydroelectric projects; in this context, the additional power supply from India will help meet Nepal's growing demand.

Deployment of Rescue and Medical Teams
India has also deployed teams of 54 experts to Nepal. Rescue teams specializing in tunnel and mud-slide operations are working alongside the Nepalese Army at Chilime and Langtang. Additionally, forensic experts are working to identify bodies using DNA kits and necessary equipment. Teams of doctors and paramedical staff are providing medical assistance to the flood-affected people.
