Major Success on the Gadchiroli-Jharkhand Border! Maoist Politburo Member Misir Besra Arrested; 24 Naxalites Lay Down Arms
Gadchiroli/Jharkhand: Security forces achieved a double success in their anti-Naxal operations on Tuesday. On one hand, 24 Naxalites from the Saranda region surrendered to the police; on the other, Misir Besra—a notorious Naxal leader, CPI (Maoist) Politburo member, and a wanted figure carrying a reward of ?2.20 crore—was arrested along with two associates. These operations have dealt a severe blow to the leadership of the Naxal organization.
The operation took place in the Maniyadih area, located near the border of Dhanbad and Giridih districts. Security forces laid a trap and apprehended Misir Besra while he was traveling in a 'Tata Magic' vehicle with his associates, Mehanat (alias Mochu) and Gaurav. Two other individuals were also detained for questioning during the operation.
The State Police Headquarters had secretly planned this operation based on intelligence inputs. It succeeded due to the coordinated efforts of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), State Police, CRPF, and Jharkhand Jaguars. The IB had been closely monitoring the movements of Misir Besra, who had managed to evade capture for months; tracking him became possible thanks to information obtained from Naxalites who had recently surrendered.
A resident of Pirtand in Giridih district, Misir Besra had been active in the Naxal movement for nearly four decades. He joined the organization through an anti-moneylender movement while pursuing his college education in Dhanbad and eventually rose to the rank of Politburo member. He was considered one of the few remaining senior leaders within the organization's top hierarchy.
Earlier, on May 21, 2025, Nambala Keshav Rao (alias Basava Raju) had been killed. Subsequently, on February 22, 2026, Bhupati and Devji surrendered. Former General Secretary Ganapathi has been missing for the past eight years, and it is suspected that he may have died; this has weakened the organization's leadership structure.
In May, 27 Naxalites from Misir Besra's squad had surrendered. The organization suffered another blow on Tuesday when 24 more individuals laid down their arms. Sources stated that information obtained from these surrenders made it possible to reach Besra.
Misir Besra had previously been arrested in Khunti in 2007 but was released following an attack on the Lakhisarai court in Bihar in 2009. Thereafter, he remained active in remote areas such as Budha Pahad, Kolhan, and Saranda. More than 150 serious criminal cases are registered against him across Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. Jharkhand had announced a reward of ?1 crore, while Odisha had announced ?1.20 crore for his capture.
