Major action by the Election Commission regarding irregularities in the Pilibhit electoral roll; two officials suspended, orders issued to register an FIR.

Pilibhit: Following complaints of irregularities in the electoral roll for the Pilibhit assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken significant action. Two Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) have been suspended, and the Commission has ordered the registration of an FIR against them. The ECI has issued clear directives to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh. Based on an examination of a report submitted by CEO Navdeep Rinwa, it was determined that two officials—Mayank Goswami and Hemant Chaudhary—were at fault. Consequently, the Commission has ordered their immediate suspension, the registration of an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the submission of a charge sheet to the Commission for further investigation. What happened? It is alleged that between May 31 and August 29, 13,779 'Form-8' applications for corrections were entered into the system online; however, the corresponding physical forms or supporting documentation did not exist in the office. Upon the Election Commission becoming aware of this, a report was sought from the UP CEO. The CEO acknowledged the irregularities in the electoral roll and confirmed that legal action would be taken against both officials. The Commission has also specified that Section 198 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita should not be invoked in the FIR, as the officials did not act in their capacity as public servants. Further actions:
The concerned court is expected to take strict action in this matter.
The electoral roll for Pilibhit must be re-examined, and a report submitted to the Commission within one week.
All District Electoral Officers (DEOs) and Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) across the state have been directed to conduct a thorough re-verification of the electoral rolls within their respective jurisdictions. All data pertaining to the addition, deletion, or modification of names—processed via Forms 6, 7, or 8—must be re-verified.
Following these allegations, the passwords of computer operators in ERO offices across the state have been deactivated.
The Election Commission has issued strict instructions regarding the accuracy of the electoral roll, emphasizing that measures must be taken to ensure such irregularities do not recur.
