Mamata Banerjee lashes out at the Election Commission; alleges names of valid voters were removed to help BJP win Bengal
Kolkata: Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sharply criticized the Election Commission on Saturday. She alleged that the Commission implemented the SIR (Special Intensive Revision) process to help the BJP win the state assembly elections by deleting the names of valid voters from the electoral rolls.
Speaking at a rally in Serampore, Hooghly district, Mamata Banerjee said, "The truth about how the BJP has used the Election Commission is now before the public. Protests across the country will continue until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigns." She further alleged that the police are acting on behalf of the ruling BJP and are snatching voter identity cards from members of the minority community.
Meanwhile, eggs and stones were hurled at the car of Kunal Ghosh—an MLA from Mamata Banerjee's faction—in the Uttarpara area while he was on his way to attend her rally in Serampore.
Kalyan Banerjee, an MP from Mamata Banerjee's faction, stated that only the 'Cockroach Janata Party' (CJP) could remove Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar from his post; no other party could do so. He added that the CJP has posed a major challenge to the ruling dispensation.
Opposition to the SIR process has intensified nationwide. In Karnataka, the Congress party staged a protest at Freedom Park in Bengaluru. Several senior leaders, including D.K. Shivakumar, participated in the demonstration, demanding the resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. In Ranchi, RJD workers burned an effigy of Gyanesh Kumar.
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, also criticized the Election Commission. He alleged that the Central Government has entrusted Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar with the task of 'match-fixing' the country's elections. Rahul Gandhi made this statement while sharing a report claiming that Gyanesh Kumar had offered a former Chief Secretary of Kerala the opportunity to contest elections on a BJP ticket.
The BJP, however, has dismissed all these allegations. The party asserted that a statement issued by the Election Commission has proven the claims made by the Congress and Rahul Gandhi regarding the voter list SIR (Summary Revision) to be false.
