Massive Fire in Lucknow: Over 200 Shanties Reduced to Ashes in Vikas Nagar; Flames Visible 10 Kilometers Away

Lucknow (April 16, 2026): A massive fire broke out on Wednesday evening in a shanty settlement (Jhuggi Basti) located in the Vikas Nagar area of ??Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. In this blaze, more than 250 shanties were completely reduced to ashes. The fire was so intense that flames and plumes of smoke were visible from a distance of up to 10 kilometers.
The situation was further exacerbated as more than 30 gas cylinders exploded in succession due to the fire. Several animals (livestock) perished in the blaze. Many families have lost all their belongings and have now been rendered homeless. The incident caused widespread panic among local residents.
The Fire Department immediately dispatched over 20 fire tenders to the scene. It took approximately three hours to bring the fire under control. As a precautionary measure, the administration cut off the power supply to the area, and around 20 nearby houses were evacuated.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took immediate cognizance of the incident and directed officials to expedite rescue and relief operations. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak personally visited the site to assess the situation and issued necessary instructions.
The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. The police and the administration have initiated a thorough inquiry into the matter. Although some local residents have alleged that the fire was set deliberately, there has been no official confirmation regarding this claim.
Rumors had circulated that some children had died in the tragedy; however, this has not been officially confirmed. Efforts to provide immediate relief to the affected families are currently underway.
This incident has become a major topic of discussion across Lucknow and the surrounding region. It has once again sparked a debate regarding fire safety measures within shanty settlements.
