Mizoram Voter List Revision: Over 46,000 Names Removed; Death, Migration, and Duplicate Entries Cited as Main Reasons
New Delhi/Aurangabad (Correspondent): Following the Election Commission's 'Special Intensive Revision Drive,' the names of 46,191 voters have been removed from the electoral roll in Mizoram. The drive commenced on May 20 and concluded on Sunday (June 28, 2026). The entire process was conducted digitally.
According to Ethel Rothangpui, Joint Chief Electoral Officer of Mizoram, the names were removed due to reasons such as death, untraceable addresses, permanent migration, and duplicate registrations. Following the revision, the total number of voters in the state stands at 8,28,877.
Breakdown of removed names by reason:
Deceased voters: 21,290
Untraceable addresses: 8,352
Permanently migrated to other states/abroad: 13,992
Duplicate registrations: 2,245
Refusal due to religious reasons: 312
As per the Election Commission's schedule, the new electoral roll is set to be published on July 4, 2026. Voters will have the opportunity to file claims and objections regarding the list between July 5 and August 4, 2026.
This revision exercise was undertaken following a demand by the student organization 'Mizo Zirlai Pawl,' with a special focus on the Chakma-majority areas of southern Mizoram.
This campaign is part of the Election Commission's efforts to maintain a clean and accurate electoral roll.
